6 Signs Your Gums Need Attention from a Periodontal Specialist
Bleeding, swollen, or receding gums? That’s just the first sign that something’s brewing under the surface. Here are six signs it may be time to see a periodontal specialist.

Your gums do a lot more than frame your smile. They protect the foundation of your teeth, support your oral health, and can even offer clues about what’s happening elsewhere in your body.

So when your gums start bleeding, pulling back, swelling, or feeling tender, you should pay them a little attention. These symptoms may seem minor at first, but they can indicate gum disease or other periodontal concerns that require specialized care.

At Baton Rouge Periodontics & Implants, our team helps diagnose and treat gum problems before they lead to more serious issues, including bone and tooth loss.

Dr. Jenny Herman and her team share six signs that your gums need attention from a periodontal specialist.

1. Your gums bleed when you brush or floss

A little blood in the sink may seem minor, but it isn’t something to shrug off. Even if they don’t hurt, bleeding gums often signal inflammation, usually from plaque buildup along your gumline.

If bleeding happens regularly, it may be an early sign of gingivitis or a more advanced stage of gum disease. The sooner you address it, the easier it is to treat.

2. Your gums look swollen, red, or tender

Healthy gums should look firm and pink, not puffy, irritated, or sore.

Swelling and tenderness often mean that your gums are inflamed. This can happen when bacteria accumulate beneath your gumline and trigger an immune response. Without treatment, that inflammation can damage the tissue and bone that support your teeth.

3. Your gums are pulling away from your teeth

Gum recession can make your teeth look longer than they used to. It can also expose sensitive tooth roots, which can cause discomfort when you eat or drink something hot, cold, or sweet.

Receding gums don’t grow back on their own. A periodontal specialist like Dr. Herman can identify the cause and recommend treatment to protect your roots and prevent further recession.

Potential treatments for gum recession include:

  • Watchful waiting
  • Antibiotics
  • Improved at-home oral care
  • Gum grafting
  • Pinhole surgical technique (PST™) and laser-assisted new attachment procedure (LANAP®)

Dr. Herman will explain all of your options and recommend the one that’s right for you based on the severity of your gum recession.

4. You have persistent bad breath

It’s one thing to have bad breath after eating a garlicky meal. It’s a whole other issue when you have chronic bad breath.

Bad breath that doesn’t improve with brushing, flossing, or mouthwash may be more than a surface-level issue and may instead point to a gum infection.

Bacteria trapped in deep gum pockets can produce odors and contribute to ongoing bad breath.

The good news: treating the underlying gum infection makes a bigger difference than masking bad breath with gum or mints.

5. Your teeth feel loose, or your bite feels different

Loose teeth are never something to ignore. As gum disease progresses, it can damage your bone and the connective tissue that holds your teeth in place. You may notice shifting teeth, new gaps, or a bite that suddenly feels “off.” These changes warrant prompt evaluation by a periodontal specialist like Dr. Herman.

6. You’ve been told you have deep gum pockets

During a dental exam, Dr. Herman may measure the spaces (pockets) between your teeth and gums. A periodontal pocket measuring 1-3 millimeters is normal, but anything deeper can indicate that your gum tissue has pulled away from the teeth. This creates spaces where bacteria can collect.

If you have deep gum pockets, we can clean below the gumline, treat infection, and help prevent further damage.

Why seeing a periodontal specialist matters

General dental care is nonnegotiable (Don’t skip your routine cleanings!), but periodontists focus specifically on your gums, bone, and structures that support your teeth.

If gum disease is advanced, recurring, or causing discomfort, a periodontal specialist can provide more targeted treatment for the gums and/or bone. That may include deep cleanings, gum therapy, laser treatment, bone grafting, or dental implant planning when needed.

Don’t wait for gum symptoms to get worse

Gum problems rarely (if ever) improve by ignoring them. Thankfully, you don’t have to look far to find a periodontal specialist in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. As a member of the American Academy of Periodontology, Dr. Herman is well-equipped to help you protect your smile (and your gums)!
